Mature Women’s Drum Class

5:30 to 7:30
$87 per month
There is no drop-in fee for this class.
(Membership to this class allows the student to attend all classes at Bush Mango.)
Our Monday night drum class was inspired by a group of women who were looking for not only a drum class, but also a supportive and like-minded group of women who could discuss the interrelationships between the poly-rhythmic nature of West African music and the patterns of maturing with grace and vitality!
Some of the participants have wanted to drum all their lives and just never made the time (sound familiar?) while others have been involved with music all their lives. Some are retired, some are still working,
some are grandmothers, most are mothers, and all are fully engaged in the conversation about what it means to be a woman in contemporary society.
This class is often invited to share its music in performance and has become
the hub of volunteer support for Bush Mango Drum & Dance on many levels! The women have donated their time at performances, helped shape and create our Bush Mango Cook Book, donated furniture for our youth room, and donated vacation time to assist with our Youth Summer Camp. Tuesdays
6:00-7:00 p.m. Jembe Drum 1
Jembe I introduces the new - advanced beginner student to West African drumming. Jembe, dundun, sangban and kekini are all played and the students ability to understand the poly-rhythmic nature of the music is the focus.
Thursdays
6:00-7:00 p.m. Jembe Drum 2
Go deeper with rhythms,
learning technique, musicianship, and culture of Guinea, Mali, Ivory
Coast and the Senegambia region. Bush Mango drum classes
engage and delight all levels of ability. If you have a beating heart,
you can benefit from the power of traditional jembe drumming. Lead
instructor Blair Hornbuckle teaches from the heart, closely following
the oral tradition he learned from his African born teachers. His
playing is clear and crisp, with phrases chunked down and built upon
so that novices and experienced players all have something to add
to the music, and something to aspire to.
As drum students skills and endurance grows, they may also be invited to
play for dance classes.
Student drums are available to members for use during class time on a first-come,
first-served basis. Most members purchase their own personal drum(s) once
they have first had a chance to try several of the student drums. Having
their own drum allows for practice at home and with friends outside of class
time, enabling students who choose to practice to grow their own abilities
at a faster pace. Drop in fees are $15 per class. Saturdays
